Managers in business organizations are increasingly outsourcing their thinking to generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, according to a study by the University of Bath.
The researchers warn that repeatedly turning to machines for answers could slowly weaken the judgment managers build through experience, leaving companies less prepared to handle difficult decisions when AI gets it wrong.
The tool will weaken what the authors call “managerial phronesis” — the practical wisdom managers build through real-world experience, reflection and human interaction.
